animal cells Flashcards
(11 cards)
A network of membranes studded with ribosomes. Function: Synthesizes and modifies proteins destined for secretion or insertion into membranes.
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (RER)
The control center of the cell, containing DNA. Function: Directs cell activities and stores genetic information.
Nucleus
A dense region within the nucleus. Function: Produces ribosomes.
* Ribosomes: Small structures made of RNA and protein. Function: Synthesize proteins.
Nucleolus
Membrane-bound sacs containing enzymes. Function: Break down cellular waste and debris.
Lysosomes
Cylindrical structures involved in cell division. Function: Organize microtubules during cell division.
Centrioles
The “powerhouses” of the cell. Function: Generate energy (ATP) through cellular respiration.
Mitochondria
The outer boundary of the cell. Function: Controls what enters and exits the cell.
Plasma Membrane
Small, membrane-bound organelles containing enzymes. Function: Break down fatty acids and detoxify harmful substances.
Peroxisomes:
A stack of flattened membrane-bound sacs. Function: Modifies, sorts, and packages proteins and lipids
Golgi Apparatus
A network of membranes without ribosomes. Function: Synthesizes lipids, detoxifies drugs, and stores calcium ions.
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum (SER)
Hollow tubes providing structural support. Function: Provide cell structure and facilitate movement.
