Q

What is the function of connective tissues?

A

Binds tissues and organs together and provide support and protection

25
What are the main types of connective tissues?
Adipose tissues, bones, blood, cartilage, fibrous connective tissues and loose connective tissues
26
What are the cell shape classifications of epithelial cells?
Simple squamous, simple cuboidal, simple columnar, stratified squamous, stratified cuboidal, stratified columnar and pseudostratified columnar
27
Where are simple squamous epithelial cells found and what is their function?
Air sacs of lungs, lining of heart, blood vessels and lymphatic vessels. They allow materials to pass through by diffusion and filtration and secretes lubricating substances
28
Where are simple cuboidal epithelial tissues founds and what is their function?
In ducts and secretory portions of small glands and in kidney tubules. They secrete and absorb substances
29
Where are simple columnar epithelial cells found and what is their function?
Ciliates tissues are in bronchi, uterine tubes and uterus. Non ciliates tissues are in the digestive tract and bladder. They secrete mucus and the ciliated tissues moves the mucus.
30
Where are stratified squamous epithelial tissues found and what is their function?
Skin, lines the esophagus, mouth and vagina. it protects against abrasion
31
Where are stratified cuboidal tissues found and whet is their function?
Sweat glands, salivary glands and mammary glands. They are protective tissues
32
Where is stratified columnar epithelial tissues located and what are the function?
The male urethra and ducts of some glands.it secretes and protects.
33
Where are pseudrostratified columnar epithelial cells located and what are the functions?
Lines the trachea and much of the upper respiratory tract. Secretes mucus, ciliates tissue moves the mucus.
34
Where are transitional epithelial tissues found and what are its function?
Lines the bladder, urethra and ureters. Allows the organs to stretch and expand.
35
What are glandular epithelial tissues?
Columnar epithelial tissues with goblet cells
36
Where are glandular epithelial tissues found and what is it's function?
Found in specialized gland cells. Synthesize and secretes substances such as enzymes, hormones etc
37
Where are ciliates epithelial tissues found and what is their function?
In digestive tract, lungs, nose, uterus, fallopian tube. Absorb and secrete mucus.
38
What is the function of adipose tissues?
Energy storage, provide padding and insulation
39
What are bones?
Dense and mineralized connective tissues
40
What is the function of bones?
Provide support, protect internal organs, produce red and white blood cells, store minerals
41
What is blood?
Liquid extracellular matrix containing plasma, erythrocytes, leukocytes and platelets
42
What is the function of blood?
Transport of oxygen nutrients hormones. Regulation of pH or temperature. Protection eg. Clotting.
43
What is the composition of blood?
Plasma, Buffy coat, RBCs
44
What is cartilage?
Tissue made up of cells called chondrocytes embedded in a matrix strengthened with fibers of collagen and sometimes elastin
45
What are the 3 types of cartilage?
Elastic, hyaline and fiber
46
Describe elastic cartilage
Flexible due to presence of elastic fibers
47
Where is elastic cartilage found?
Outer ear, larynx and Eustachian tubes
48
Describe hyaline cartilage.
Contains mostly type 2 collagen fibers
49
Where is hyaline cartilage found?
Lining bone joints
50
Describe fibrocartilage.
Contains more collagen than hyaline and contains mainly type 1 collagen. it is the strongest and most rigid cartilage.
51
Where is fiber cartilage found?
Intervertebral discs, connects tendons and ligaments to bones
52
Describe fibrous connective tissues.
Made up of collagen and fibroblasts, have high tensile and very strong with varying hexibility
53
describe the 2 types of fibrous connective tissue.
Regular dense - arranged in parallel bundles Irregular dense - interweaving layer
54
Give an example of regular dense fibrous connective tissue
Tendons and ligaments
55
Give an example of irregular dense fibrous connective tissue.
Sclera
56
What is the function of loose connective tissues?
Binds epithelium to underlying tissues and hold tissues and organs in place
57
What are the 2 primary cell types in loose connective tissues?
Fibroblasts and macrophages
58
What is the function of fibroblasts
Secrete proteins of extracellular fibers
59
What is the function of macrophages?
Specialized roaming WBCs that engulf pathogens and debris
