ANIMAL TISSUES Flashcards
(26 cards)
Four Categories based on general appearance and function:
- Epithelial
- Connective
- Muscular
- Nervous
Tissues that cover the external and internal surfaces of the body
Epithelial Tissues
It is represented by a single layer of flattened cells. It is located in the Lung Alveoli and inner linings of arteries.
Simple Squamous Epithelium
Represented by single layer of box-shaped cells. Located in the Glandular tissues and kidney tubules.
Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
This is for protecting underlying structures,
permitting, or denying passage of substances,
and secreting or absorbing substances.
Epithelial Tissues
Represented by single layer of elongated, rectangular cells. Located in the inner lining of the digestive tract (small intestine and stomach)
Simple Columnar Epithelium
It occur in the surface of the skin and in the linings of mouth, esophagus, vagina, and anus.
Stratified Squamous Epithelium
Appear in the respiratory tract
Pseudostratified Columnar Epithelium
Made up of several layers of cells that become flattened when stretched. It appear only in the urinary system, primarily in the bladder and ureter.
Transitional Epithelium
This is characterized by large amounts of extracellular materials that support and bind together the parts of the body. It fill up spaces between and within organs.
Connective Tissues
Types of Connective Tissue
Loose
Dense
Cartilage
Bone
Adipose
Blood
Component of Connective Tissues
Extracellular Matrix
- Fibers Ground
- Substance
It contains tightly packed collagen fibers, making it stronger than loose connective tissue
Dense/Fibrous
A type of connective tissue that stores or sequesters food for the body in the form of fat droplets
Adipose Tissue
It is a connective tissue with a large amount of the matrix and variable amount of fibers
Cartilage
Clearer looking ground substance of cartilage
Hyaline Cartilage
It is densely layered collagen fibers. More flattened and organized cell rows.
Fibrocartilage
Visible elastic fibers in matrix
Elastic Cartilage
Most specialized structural connective tissues, and the strongest of them. It is responsible for storing calcium that can be withdrawn by the body as blood calcium levels drop. It also produce red blood cells in the bone marrow.
Bone
Despite its fluid nature __________ is classified as a type of connective tissue.
Blood
Cellular Components of Blood
Red Blood Cell
White Blood Cell
Platelets
Responsible for locomotion and for the movements of the various parts of the body with respect to one another.
Muscle Tissues
Types of Muscle Tissues
Smooth
Skeletal
Cardiac
This tissue controls the animal’s body through transmission of electrical signals. It specialized for reception of stimuli and conduction of impulses from one region to another. Consists of two basic kinds of cells. Found in the brain, spinal cord, and nerves.
Nervous Tissues
