Q

Mechanism of injury for inversion

A

most common sprain is when inversion causes the anterior talofibular ligament and the calcaneofibular ligament to tear as they get over stretched/ extended.

Q

Predisposing factors

A

84% of ankle injuries are sprains
- shoe design, the inclined heel increase angle for injury
- football tackles, the surface played on.
- previous injuries - the muscles suppporting the ankle during rotation is weaker (lateral ligaments are at most risk)

Q

Rehabilitation

A
  • proprioceptive treatment should start once initial pain and swelling has subsided.
  • P.R.I.C.E
  • ROM exercises in the first 72 hours after injury; stretching, strength training and balance exercises.
  • avoid running
-ankle taping or a brace can help protect the joint from further injury while its healing
