Anthropometry Flashcards
(22 cards)
Body Mass
Introduce yourself, ask if participant knows what is about to happen (If they don’t explain) ask if participant gives consent and explain they can withdraw at any time
• Make sure scale is correctly calibrated and ensure to nearest 100g
• Usually want to take measurement in the morning before eaten anything
• Ask participant to remove shoes, socks and remove anything from pockets etc
o Explain why this is important – accuracy of measurement
• Ask participant to stand on scale - face forward
• As they do this explain what mass can be used for – BMI
• Ask participant to remove from scale and re stand on it – say to average out weight
Stretch Stature
Introduce yourself, ask if participant knows what is about to happen (If they don’t explain) ask if participant gives consent and explain they can withdraw at any time
• Ask participant to remove shoes
• Explain that will have to place hands on participants cheeks and gently pull there neck up when taking measurement - to achieve horizontal sagittal plane (flat head)
• Ask participant to stand facing you on the base of the stadiometer
• Place hands in gun shape and place upper finger just below ear
• Ask participant to breathe in while simultaneously lifting there head up using the gun position just below ear
o Making sure eyes in same horizontal plane as ear
o Make sure heels are flat on ground and touching back of stadiometer and bum also touching the stick
• Assistant Take measurement
• Ask participant to relax and then repeat
Arm Span
• Ask participant to stand against a wall near another wall perpendicular
• Explain why take arm span – alternative for height and particularly important as arm span limits decrease while height does
• Ask participant to place arms out with hands touching the wall there back is too
• One hand should have finger tip touching the perpendicular wall
• Take measurement from midle fingertip to middle fingertip
o Make sure butox is against wall
o Aim for the whole arm to be flat against the wall
• Mark where middle finger tip reaches and measure
• Ask participant to relax and then repeat
BMI calculations
kg/m^2
Underweight BMI
<18.5kg/m2
Healthy weight
18.5-24.9 kg/m2
Overweight
25-29.9 kg/m2
Obesity grade 1
30-34.9 kg/m2
Obesity grade 2
35-39.9 kg/m2
Obesity grade 3
40+ kg/m2
Ulna Length
Left arm
• Ask participant to stand in anthropometric position
• Ask participant to bring left arm across to touch there right shoulder
o Just so hand lays flat not so it is grabbing it
• Measure from point of elbow to midpoint of bone on wrist
• Measure to nearest 0.5cm
• Repeat
Arm Girth
• Ask participant to stand in anthropometric position
• Using finger find the dint near the acromiale (shoulder)
• Mark
• Then identify dimple on elbow and feel for the end of the bone (radiale)
• Mark
• Using segometer measure the difference between these two land marks
• Mentally half this
• Measure half from the acromiale (Mid acriomale-radiale)
• Mark above
• Using a flexible tape measure from this landmark wrap tape measure around arm loosely
o Zero to be below the mark
o Wrap round to bring it to above line
o Make sure get measurements correctly
• Making sure horizontal all the way round - repeat
Waist girth
- Visually look at where inner part of waist is
- Stand to side wrap tape measure round with lower number underneath
- Move tape measure carefully so naturally finds indent of waist
- Take measurement
Hip girth
- Stand to the side
- Looking for the widest point round bum
- Wrap tape round
- Lower number underneath
- Take Measurement
Waist to hip ratio
waist/hip
Risk of metabolic complications Increased by waist circumference
Males - >94cm
Female-> 80cm
Risk of metabolic complications significantly Increased by waist circumference
Males -> 102cm
Females -> 88cm
Risk of metabolic complications significantly increased by waist-hip ratio
Male > 0.90cm
Female > 0.85cm
Bicep skin fold
• Using mark for arm girth make a make roughly where the bicep line will be
o Kinda half way round the arm
• Ask participant to rotate arm so palm Is facing forward
• Visually identify half way of bicep along horizontal line
• Mark this as a vertical line making a plus
• Explain to participant going to pinch fat
• Pinch fat above the plus
• Place calliper on plus and measure after been on skin fold for 4 second
Tricep skin fold
• Using mark for arm girth make a make roughly where the tricep line will be
o at the back
• Visually identify half way of tricep along horizontal line
• Mark this as a vertical line making a plus
• Explain to participant going to pinch fat
• Pinch fat above the plus
• Place calliper on plus and measure after been on skin fold for 4 second
Subscapular
• Mark where most prominent part of shoulder blade is with a horizontal line
o May not be able to find so can ask participant hand behind back to find. Draw mark where that is but when arm back in anthropometric position
• Then draw a vertical line to make a right angle
• Measure 2cm down at 45degree angle
• Mark with an X with the cross point being at the 2cm point
• With left hand carefully pick up skin fold callipers
• Warn participant about to pinch
• With left hand pinch above the X mark and do not let go
• Carefully and slowly clamp calliper
• Wait 4 seconds
• Take measurement
• Remove calliper
• Let go with left hand
Iliac Crest
• Locate the top of the iliac crest
o Can ask participant to locate if struggle to identify by asking to put hands on hips
• Mark with a horizontal line
• From here identify the natural skin fold
• Mark the middle of skin fold
• Turn second mark to a cross
• Grip skin fold horizontal and on side of back closer to cross
• Use calliper to measure skin fold on the cross
