Q
What are antibiotics?
A
Antibiotics are drugs which destroy/inhibit the growth of microorganisms.
1
Q
Diversity in organisms arises from changes to its DNA. Which two ways do these changes occur?
A
- Changing the quantity/structure of DNA, this is a mutation.
- Recombining the existing DNA of two individuals. This occurs during sexual reproduction.
2
Q
Explain one way in which antibiotics work…
A
They can prevent bacteria from making normal cell walls, the cell walls which are made as a result are weaker and so cannot withstand the pressure from the water so osmotic lysis occurs (cell bursts) and consequently the bacteria cell will die.
3
Q
What is a mutation?
A
A mutation is a change in DNA that causes different characteristics. (They are random an rare.)
