Antibiotics Flashcards
Terminology &theory (6 cards)
how does a antibiotic work?
Destroying the structure of bacterium
- weakening cell wall cell burst
- damaging the cell membrane causing cell contents to leak
Inhibit the metabolism of bacteria leads to death of cell
How does resistance develop?
Based on natural selection
Resistance develops due to:
Reproduction rapidly by binary fission
A mutilation provides protection against antibiotic developed in bacterium
Antibiotics only destroys part of bacteria
Resistant bacteria with mutation survive +multiply
New population of resistance bacteria is formed
Why does resistance develop?
incorrect antibiotic is prescribed
course of antibiotic is not completed
incorrect diagnosis eg. Virus treated with antibiotic
Unnecessary use of antibiotic
what is biotechnology
the use of living organisms or biological systems for industrial purposes such as food processing or production of antibiotics
What are antibiotics?
substances that destroy microorganisms
What is a antimetabolite?
substance that interfere with a cells metabolically processes
