Bacteria Flashcards
Learn terminology &processes (10 cards)
What is a bacteria?
single-celled microbes. These are simple compared to other organisms as they have no true nucleus or membrane bound organelles.
how many cells do bacteria consist of?
1 (unicellular
how many types of shapes does bacteria have?
4
Name each type + plural form .
1) rod shaped(bacillius /bacilli )
2) sphere shaped (coccus/cocci)
3) spiral shaped (spirillius/sprillilum)
4) comma shaped (vibrio 2x)
Characteristics of bacteria
- Smallest living organism( 0.5- 5um)
- prokaryotes
- unicellular
- classified according to how obtains food (autotrophic/hetrotrophic)
- comes in different shapes
- reproduction asexually -binary fisson
Difference between aerobic /aerobic ?
Aerobic: cannot survive w/o oxygen
produce more energy
settled at surface of liquid
Anaerobic: survive w/o oxygen
produce less energy
settled at bottom of liquid
Autrophic bacteria and it’s types
Bacteria that can produce its own food
1) photosynthetic- gets energy from sun and does photosynthesis to obtain food
2) chemosynthetic -gets energy from chemical reactions and gets food from inorganic molecules
Hetrotrophic bacteria and it’s types
Bacteria that cannot produce its own food
1) parasitic - obtain food from living organisms
2) saprophtic -obtain food from dead organic material
3) mutualistic -obtain food from organism it is in symbiotic relationship with
Function of slime capsule in bacteria?
To protect cell against desiccation(drying out) and protect from enemies
Name parts of structure of bacteria
Cytoplasm Ribosome Cell wall Cell membrane Slime capsule Nucleiod
