same goes with mental health vs mental illness, some feelings of anxiety may relate to normal emotions
what are anxiety disorders
features of excessive fear and anxiety
fear - emotional response
anxiety - future threat
muscle tension to avoid future danger
generalised anxiety disorder
feelings of fear and and anxiety are accompanied by 3 or more of: restlessness, poor concentration, fatigue, irritable, muscle aches, poor sleep
psychological symptoms
restless, dread, on edge, poor concentration, withdraw for social contact, stress, decreased self esteem
physical symptoms
dizzy, tired, irregular heartbeat, muscle aches, shaking, dry mouth, sweating, shortness of breath, sick, headache, stomach pain, pins and needles
what happens internally
activates the autonomic nervous system which results in bodily symptoms such as panic attacks based on adrenaline
adrenaline
prioritises blood supply to move oxygenated blood around for quick getaway so takes it away from organs where it is not needed in times of danger
comorbidity of anxiety
highest comorbid with depression
of people with anxiety 81% have struggled with depression
treatment of anxiety
medication - anxiolytic drug therapy
CBT - can be used alongside drugs
REMBT - evidence focused - tries to resolve emotional and behavioural problems
separation anxiety
most likely developed in 0-3m
anxiety and fear around separation of another
phobias
intense fear around a situation, environment, animal or other type of fear which impacts functioning for 6m+
treatment for phobias
CBT, exposure therapies
PTSD
response to trauma is normal but long after time has passed it becomes an issue
main areas of brain impacted - prefrontal cortex, amygdala, and hippocampus
