what are NDD
early onset often before school age and effect rest of life
intellectual (learning) disability
IQ of 70 or below is first indication
how well they can look after themselves
combine the 2 tests for diagnosis
biological causes of learning disability
very unclear - 50-60% of people have no identifiable cause
environmental causes of learning disability
maternal health conditions - diabetes, obesity, depression, smoking, birth complications, maternal age (younger = less likely)
prognosis of learning disability
decreased life expectancy, require more support, face greater social issues
first identification of autism
LEO KANNER - first child psych clinic in USA 1930. used autism to reference a unique condition 1943
HANS ASPERGER - identified asperger’s
GRUNYA SUKHAREVA - described autism before these in 1925. said it was due to brain development not parenting
what does autism look like?
poor social interactions, social communication, stims, can’t recognise emotions or empathise, poor eye contact, sleep difficulties, atypical reactions, eating, anxiety, bullying
sensory experiences with autism
reduced or heightened sensitivity in senses
causes of autism
no one knows exact cause
genes - can run in family (over 100 genes linked)
environmental triggers - birth difficulties, health conditions
