Aphasia Flashcards
(25 cards)
thrombosis
collection of debris that blocks blood flow
atherosclerosis
when cholesterol or fats block blood flow
embolis
when tissue from a tumor blocks blood flow
ishemic strokes
caused by a block in blood flow
ischemic core/infarct
irreversible cell death
ischemic penumbra
surrounding area that still gets blood flow and no cell death, can be saved from lasting damage
transient ischemic attacks
cleared by the body, if happens once, doesn’t really cause lasting effects. reoccuring ones can and they are a warning for a larger stroke
Hemorrhagic Strokes
bleeding in brain caused by ruptured blood vessels. Hypertension is a risk factor.
sudden onset with severe headache
intracerebral
in the brain
extracerebral
meninges or outside of brain
ischemic vs hemorrhagic
ischemic is less severe
semantic paraphasia
using the word book for a crayon
phonemic/literal paraphasia
tup for cup, sound level
neologism
nonwords, like skeen for pencil
perseveration
repeated word used incorrectly
logorrhea
lots of talking that is incoherent
empty speech
substituting general words for specific (ex: this = car)
agrammatic speech
only uses content words
anomia
word finding difficulties
preserved langauge
automatic speech EX: days of week
Broca’s Aphasia
nonfluent, anomia, short phrases, speech sound errors telegraphic speech, unable to repeat, okay auditory comprehension, aware of errors
Transcortical Motor Aphasia
lesions anterior to broca’s area, affects anterior cerebral artery and middle cerebral artery
nonfluent, reduced spontaneous speech, good repetition skills, good comprehension, affects upper extremities and writing,
Mixed Transcortical Aphasia
rare and caused by lesion in arterial zone of brain, spares arcuate fasciculus, brocas and wernickes areas
nonfluent, severe echolalia, severe impaired fluency and auditory comprehension, weakness in all limbs and affects vision
Global Aphasia
lesions affect all areas of language
perseveration, apraxia, impaired repetition, naming, and audtitoru comprehension
