Apoptosis Flashcards
(7 cards)
1
Q
Apoptosis
A
A controlled process where a cell self destructs to prevent damage to the organism
2
Q
Purpose of Apoptosis
A
- Helps shape organs during embryonic development
- Removes damaged or mutated cells to prevent diseases
- Prevents cancer
3
Q
Apoptosis process
A
- The cell receives an apoptotic signal
- Cell shrinks and condenses, breaking down internal components
- DNA is fragmented into smaller pieces
- The cell forms apoptotic bodies
- Immune cells engulf and digest apoptotic bodies to prevent inflammation
4
Q
Difference between Apoptosis and Necrosis
A
Apoptosis is a controlled process whereas necrosis is uncontrolled. And apoptosis does not do any damage to nearby cells whereas necrosis does
5
Q
What are the two pathways of Apoptosis
A
- Intrinsic
- Extrinsic
6
Q
Blebs
A
bulges of the cell membrane which is formed by apoptosis, these break off to form apoptotic bodies
7
Q
Role of phagocytes
A
Cleans up the apoptotic bodies formed after apoptosis through phagocytosis
