Applied Knowledge: 2 Flashcards
What is personal biomedical status and how does it influence exercise participation and adherence?
Any health conditions, including obesity and cardiovascular disease, and is typically a weak predictor of exercise behavior
How does obesity typically influence activity and adherence?
Obese individuals are typically less active than normal weight individuals, and are less likely to adhere to supervised exercise programs
What are the demographic variables that personally attribute to physical activity participation?
Age, gender, education and income
What are the personal attribute determinants for physical activity participation?
- Demographic variables
- Biomedical status
- Activity history
- Psychological traits
- Knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs
How does gender relate to adherence?
Men demonstrate higher and more consistent activity adherence rates than women
How does income relate to physical activity levels?
Lower levels of activity are seen with lower incomes
How does age relate to an individual’s activity level?
Lower levels of activity are seen with increasing age, however, age has been shown to be unrelated to adherence levels when examined in supervised exercise settings
As there’s no exact formula how does a trainer help clients continue with a program?
Combine all their interpersonal, communication, and program design skills to create well-rounded exercise programs that not only get people fit and healthy but create an exercise experience that is positive and worthwhile.
How does education relate to physical activity levels?
Lower levels of activity are seen with fewer years of education
How does personal activity history influenced exercise participation and inherence?
Activity history is arguably the most important and influential personal attribute variable, past program participation is the most reliable predictor of current participation and is consistent with all demographics
How do personal psychological traits influence exercise participation and inherence?
Individuals have a wide variety of knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs about starting and sticking with an exercise program that directly relate to being active
What is personal health perception?
An individual’s perception of their own health level
How does negatively perceiving your health effect activity and adherence?
Those who perceive their health to be poor are unlikely to start right here to an activity program, those who do will likely be at an extremely low intensity and frequency
How does an individual’s locus of control affect activity inherence and participation?
A strong locus of control directly correlates to motivation and consistent adherence both to supervised and unsupervised exercise activity among healthy adults
What do perceived barriers indicate in a client?
Perceived barriers consistently demonstrate a negative relationship with physical activity program adherence
What environmental factors influence exercise participation and adherence?
- Access to facilities
- Time
- Social support
