What is appraisal
Analysing and assessing the performance of how a employee does their job and providing them with feedback
Appraisal can be informal and formal, what is formal appraisal
A much more systematic and planned out approach

The continuous assessment of an employee’s performance by the line manager in normal day to day work. This form of appraisal simply results from the day to day relationship between a manager and his/her subordinate.
4 reasons for carrying out performance appraisal
- determine what level someone is achieving currently performing at, to establish people who have potential for promotion or transfer and/or to have a basis on rewarding fairly
- find out a employees strengths and weaknesses
- to motivate employees
- establish what training and development is needed
Advantages of appraisal for employees
- opportunity to discuss work issues with their manager on a one-to-one basis
- given a clear set of objectives to work towards during the next year
- opportunity to discuss potential promotion prospects and pay level with their manager
- motivate them, improve job satisfaction and can be praised for what they are done well and be given areas to improve on
Advantages of appraisal for employers
- identify employees strengths and weaknesses in their current role and focus on potential promotion
- can plan correct training programmes for employees which can increase their motivation and therefore performance
- employee motivation increases productivity and therefore overall profits
- give opportunity positive and negative feedback
Disadvantages of appraisal for employee
May feel under pressure as they are under close inspection from their manager and won’t perform as well as they could
May view it in a negative way as their superior needs to check up on them
Disadvantages for employerss with appraisal
May have to be trained to become an appraiser
Appraiser may be stressed about getting useful information
Employees may not take the process seriously
What is the method of appraisal “self evaluation”
A written account in which the employee critically assesses themself. They might answer questions on the form and/or write a report themself on their performance, attitudes, abilities and set out future targets and objectives
Advantages of “self evaluation”
-May provoke a more honest answer than questions asked to them from a superior.
- it encourages self reflection (makes employee think about what needs to be done to improve)
- makes employee feel responsible for their own performance (accountability)
Disadvantages of self evaluation
Employee may not be aware of their own faults
They may not know how to improve on their weaknesses

What is the method of appraisal “observation”
Employee is observed by their assessor when working. Usually followed by a one-on-one interview.
Advantages of observation
Allows employees to be reviewed in their usual surroundings and environment
Gives a true picture of their work
Disadvantages of observation
Employees may be off put by being observed doing their work
What is the appraisal method “interview”
One-to-one discussion between employee and the assessor.
Advantages of the interview
Gives both parties a private conversation to discuss the employees progress and work
Allows employee to put forward their own ideas
Diagnoses problems and can set in motion a way to fix them
At the end of the interview what will the appraiser fill out
A form which shows the appraisees initiative, ability to cope with pressure and leadership skills.
