AQA Chapter 2.3 Flashcards
What is the reaction involved in joining two monosaccharides together and what are the products?
It is a condensation reaction. Two monosaccharides form one disaccharide and a water molecule.
How are disaccharides formed?
Disaccharides are formed when two monosaccharides are joined together by a glycosidic bond.
What are the constituent molecules of maltose?
Glucose and glucose
What are the constituent molecules of sucrose?
Glucose and fructose
What are the constituent molecules of lactose?
Glucose and galactose.
What is the reaction involved in breaking disaccharides and what are the products?
It is a hydrolysis reaction. One disaccharide and one water molecule makes two monosaccharides.
What is the difference between an alpha and a beta glucose?
In an alpha glucose, the hydroxide group bonded to carbon 1 is above the carbon. In a beta glucose, the hydroxide group is below the carbon 1
