Aquatic Biomes Flashcards
(16 cards)
Seaweeds
Large algae growing in the sea or on rocks.
Decomposers
Organisms that break down dead or decaying organisms . They carry out decomposition, a process possible by only certain kingdoms, such as fungi
Scavengers
Scavengers are animals that consume dead organisms that have died from causes other than being hunted as prey.
Diversity
Different variations.
Tides
Tides are long-period waves which move through the oceans in response to the forces exerted by the moon and sun. They originate in the oceans and progress toward the coastlines and appear as the regular rise and fall of the sea surface.
Symbiotic
A symbiotic relationship is one in which organisms exist together in a way that benefits them all.
Filter Feeders
Filter feeders suspension feeding animals that feed by straining suspended matter and food particles from water.
Intertidal
The intertidal zone is the area above water level at low tide and underwater at high tide.
Coral Reef
A coral reef is an underwater ecosystem characterised by reef-building corals. They’re formed from colonies of coral polyps held together by calcium carbonate.
Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis is the process by which plants and certain other organisms transform light energy into chemical energy.
Algae
Algae are a diverse group of aquatic organisms that can conduct photosynthesis.
Plankton
They are marine and freshwater organisms that, are too small or weak to swim against the current, so they exist in a drifting state.
Estuary
An estuary is a partially enclosed body of water with multiple rivers or streams flowing into it, and with a free connection to the open sea.
Spawning
The release or deposit of eggs from fish, frogs etc.
Wetland
A wetland is an ecosystem that’s flooded by water, either permanently or seasonally.
Filter
The removing of impurities or solid particles.
