anemia
a condition characterised by a reduced ability of the body to deliver enough oxygen to the cells due to a lack of healthy red blood cells
cholesterol
a type of fat required for optimal functioning of the body that, in excess, can lead to a range of health concerns including the blocking of the arteries (atherosclerosis). It can be ‘bad’ low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or ‘good’ high-density lipoprotein (HDL).
discretionary foods
foods and drinks not necessary to provide the nutrients the body needs, but that may add variety. However, many of these foods are high in kilojoules and are therefore described as energy dense.

when a nutrient has been artificially added to food to increase its nutritional value
macronutrient
nutrient that is required by the body in large amounts (for example, protein, carbohydrates, fats)

nutrient that is required by the body in small amounts (for example, minerals and vitamins)

a condition characterised by a reduction in bone mass that makes bones more likely to break and fracture due to a calcium defficiency

developed by a government organisation based off the australian dietary guidelines providing butrition advice to prevent short and long term consequences associated with nutritional imbalance. it includes carbohydrates, protein, dairy, fruit and vegetables. it also displays foods to have in small amounts and only eat sometimes.
Health star rating
Rates the overall nutritional profile of packaged food ranging from 1/2 star to 5 stars. based on comparing energy, risk nutrients, sodium, sugars and protective nutrients.
Healthy Eating Pyramid
developed by a non-government organisation. It represents the 5 basic food groups.
dietitians
have additional qualifications beyond nutritionists, can work in hospitals and medical therapy, provide dietary treatments, work with individuals.
nutritionist
have qualifications in food science and nutrition, work in community health roles and research, cannot provide medical treatment.
