Area Solo Quiz Flashcards
(21 cards)
What types of circuits are solo students permitted to practice during area solo flights?
Only NORMAL circuits.
NO low level, glide, flawless or abnormal (HUD Off or Aileron PWR off)
In area on first area solo, requested RTB to ESL via left initial for circuits.
TWR instructs to join for straight in approach to RWY 27.
Is this permitted?
Are there any other restrictions on how a solo student can rejoin the circuit?
YES, it is permitted.
Preferences to join via initial but may join via straight in if directed by ATC/DI or weather dictates otherwise.
During area solo, is it permissible to complete AFTER LANDING checklist while on the move?
NO.
Solo studs must complete all ground checks whilst stationary, except for line up checks after GF12.
During area solo, conducting normal circuit to full stop landing at end of sortie.
At 300 ft on final, tower states the following: “CHLEXXX, cleared to land, one on.”
State your actions.
Reply to ATC:
“Cleared to land, One on, CHLE781”
Continue approach and go around if RWY not clear by 200 feet.
While on downwind for RWY09 at ESL, THE TOWER CONTROLLER INSTRUCTS YOU TO CONDUCT ONE RIGHT ORBIT. Describe how you would react to this instruction.
Acknowledge orbit.
Do a 30 degree AoB turn to the right, rolling out on normal downwind height (1000’), speed, track and spacing.
Only orbit if instructed by ATC.
What is the meaning of a steady green light directed at aircraft in flight from control tower windows?
Authorised to land if pilot is satisfied that no collision risk exists.
What is the meaning of flashing white signal directed at aircraft on the ground from the control tower window?
Return to starting point on aerodrome.
During planning for first area solo, operations staff allocate you training area S.
Describe how you would proceed.
Decline.
S is NOT permitted.
Resubmit for E, G or H.
A, B, F with CO/CFI approval.
List the upper air sequences you are permitted to practice in the training area during your area solo.
- Fully developed clean stall
- Incipient clean stall
- Incipient base/final stall
- Wing over
- Loop
- Aileron roll
- Upper air pitch
- Steep turns
- G warm
During 1st area sol, AuthO will expect you to plan the AIREX for your 1.0 hr sortie.
Describe what you would consider to be an appropriate format and AIREX for your first area solo.
0 - STTO
+10 - Departure
+12 - Area Checks
+16 - Wingover into fully clean stall
+20 - G Warm
+24 - Loop into aileron roll
+30 - Reset, AAABC’s
+40 - Rejoin CIRA for 3 x normal circuits
+54 - Land
What are the VMC in Class C airspace below 10,000 feet?
1000 ft vertical sep from cloud.
1500 m lateral sep from cloud.
5 km visibility.
What are the minimum meteorological conditions required under 1FTS SI (OPS) 02-02 for the conduct of a first area solo?
8km visibility.
Max 5kt tailwind.
Max 10kt crosswind.
1000 ft vertical cloud separation.
1500 m lateral cloud separation.
No IMC allowed.
You are at 7000 feet in Area E during your first area solo and suddenly experience an intense metallic taste and tingling in your lips. Describe your initial actions.
ANCA = safe height, speed, heading.
Boldface:
1. EO2 … pull
2. ACS shut off … pull
3. Cabin pressure … RAM
if it persists?
4. GEN 1&2 … OFF
Following metallic taste/tingling lips, the symptoms intensify and you begin to feel happy and light headed. What are your actions?
Hypoxia/PHYSEP:
1. EO2 … Pull
2. Descend below 10,000ft
3. Oxy … OFF
4. ACS shutoff … Pull
5. Cabin pressure… RAM
Pull checklist out and know if symptoms persist or incapacitation likely… EJECT
During first area solo, tracking towards IP for RWY09 for your arrival.
The attention getters illuminate and on checking for the right MFD you see amber ‘TRIM AID’ caption.
Noting that this emergency is NOT boldface, outline your actions.
ANCA
Aviate = safe height, speed and heading.
Nav = consider not rejoining immediately (fuel dependent).
Comm = rejoin requesting 2000ft circuit height.
Once safely maintaining circuit pattern, contact DI to run through checklist or AP engaged.
Admin = run through checks.
Detail rejoin and request reposition for 3/5 mile final if suitable
During first area solo you are conducting a loop.
During the inverted portion of the loop, you notice an attention getter and on the right MFD a grey D-LINK caption.
The caption clears after 2 seconds and there are no indications remaining at the end of the loop.
Describe your actions.
ANCA
A - safe height, speed, heading
N - airspace awareness and look to reposition for orbit in area or turn for airspace.
C/A - advisory re: D-LINK
Recheck LHS MFD/NAV for boxed DLINK
Tell DI if RTB is required.
During your first area solo you are conducting stalling in area E.
At the end of the manoeuvre you check your instruments for orientation and note that you are 30 Nm TAC from ESL at 3500 feet.
Describe your actions.
ANCA: safe height, speed and heading
A/N - climb to 6000 ft established in E
C - tell ATC & DI about airspace breach
If required, RTB and conduct necessary ASR for going below airspace LSALT.
When will you contact the DI’s during normal operation in your first area solo?
On which radio channels will you contact the DI?
Prior to starting Before TO Cx in check bay.
Prior to RTB in area.
#26 on C2.
State the standard stall recovery.
Simultaneously:
Max power, Ease control column centrally forward enough to unstall wings and Rudder to prevent further yaw.
When wings unstalled: wings level, set take off attitude and Triple O’s
During your first area solo you are conducting an aileron roll. During the manoeuvre you notice an object the size of a mobile phone impact the inside of the canopy then drop to the floor of the cockpit.
Describe your actions.
ANCA: Save height/speed/heading, settled in area and auto pilot on.
FOD checklist out from AIR A IFG.
Contact DI/ATC as you may have controllability issues if it gets stuck behind pedals.
RTB via 5 mile straight in and ASR on ground.
What are the actions for ENGINE FIRE IN FLIGHT?
EO2… Pull
ACS shut off… Pull
PCL… Min Practical
PMS… Manual
Check for fire.
NO fire? LAND ASAP
YES fire?
PCL…. FUEL OFF
FUEL HYD CUT OFF… Pull
BATT 1… OFF
GENS 1&2…. OFF
If fire persists?
EJECT
