Empiricist
A person who supports the theory that all knowledge is based on experiences
Potentially
The possibility of doing something/becoming something
Actuality
Potential being achieved
Motus
The change or movement from potentially to actuality
Aetion
Reason or explanation
Material cause
The material the object is made from
Efficient cause
The mover which has actualised the object
Formal cause
The plan or shape that led to the creation of the actualised object
Final cause
The aim or purpose of the object (telos)
Theory of causation
The act or process of causing something to happen or exist
Prime mover
Force that causes movement in matter (final cause of universe)
Unmoved mover
Prime mover can’t be moving as would be changing so must remain unmoved
Pure actuality
Doesn’t change + doesn’t have potential to change
Fallacy of composition
Just because something is true for the part, it doesn’t mean it is true for the whole
Brute fact
Known to be true and can’t be ignored
