1

fraction

a fraction represents a ratio or division of two numbers

2

numerator

a/b a is the numerator

3

denominator

a/b b is the denominator

4

mixed number

a mixed number consists of a whole number and a fraction
Example: 7¼

5

adding fractions

write the sum of the denominators over the product of the denominators
Example: 1/15 + 1/16
15 + 16 = 31
15 x 16 = 240
31/240

6

subtracting fractions

write the difference between the denominators over the product of the denominators
Example: 1/9 - 1/7
9 - 7 = 2
9 x 7 = 63
2/63

7

subtracting mixed numbers

Example: 5 5/7 - 2 ⅓
first subtract the whole numbers
5 - 2 = 3

then multiply the numerator of the first expression with the denominator of the second expression and vice versa and subtract
15 - 7 = 8

multiply the denominators to get the denominator value
7 x 3 = 21

3 8/21

8

multiplying fractions

multiply the numerators and divide the result by the product of their denominators
Example: 4/5 x ⅔
8/15

9

dividing fractions

to divide one fraction by another simply multiply by the reciprocal of the divisor
(multiply straight across)
Example: 4/5 / ⅔
4/5 x 3/2
12/10
6/5
