What is arousal?
An energised state, a readiness to perform
What is the drive theory?
Theory showing when arousal increases performance also increases
What is the dominant response?
During high arousal we pick up less information (attentional narrowing) mind focuses on the dominant response
What is the zone of optimal functioning?
The peak flow performance when an athlete feels unstoppable and effortless, performance is at its best.
What is the inverted U theory?
Performance increases up until a point then it begins to fall there is a peak flow performance zone.
What is personality?
An individuals unique characteristics which make them behave differently in sporting situations
What is experience?
Skill or knowledge gained by actually doing or feeling something
What is the nature of the task?
Wether a task needs high concentration, low concentration skills, basic or complex skills
What is the catastrophe theory?
Theory suggesting that increased arousal improved performance to an optimal point but there is a dramatic reduction in performance beyond this point
What is attentional wastage?
Your focus is on something unimportant during a game.
What is attentional narrowing?
Limiting the number of different aspects of a game that a player can focus on
What is social loafing?
Loss of motivation in player due to lack of performance identification when individual efforts aren’t recognised.
What is the ringleman effect?
When individual performances decreases with group size
What is peak flow performance?
The ultimate intrinsic experience felt by athletes from a positive mental attitude.
