Arterial Disorders Flashcards
(13 cards)
discuss acute arterial occlusion
acute loss of BF d/t occlusion
deprives body parts from oxygen
usual sources of occlusion
thrombus - atherosclerotic plaque
embolus - shifted thrombus
trauma - laceration of artery
discuss arteriosclerosis obliterans (ASO)
chronic and progressive occlusion d/t atherosclerotic plaque
usually large and medium arteries of LE
sx occur distal to occluded site
risk factors for ASO
inc age
males
inc serum
smoking
inc SBP
inc weight
DM
when do sx occur in ASO
70% occlusion of artery lumen
discuss buerger’s disease or thromboangiitis obliterans (TAO)
inflammation of arteries from nicotine - vasculitis
small and medium arteries of hands and feet
no block just narrowing from inflammation
leads to necrosis and ampu
risk factors for buerger or TAO
MC in young male smokers
discuss raynaud’s disease
SY abnormality - episodic vasospasm of small arteries and arterioles of finger and toes
pallor, cyanosis, numbness and pain
triggered by cold, vibration or emotional stress
what PT intervention is contraindicated for raynaud’s
cryo
discuss polyarteritis nodosa (PAIN)
acute necrotizing vasculitis - small to medium arteries
systemic - involves kidney, joints, skin, nerves and other tissues
discuss cryoglobulinemia
cryoglobulins - immunoglobulins that react to cold temp
assoc c - Hep C, autoimmune disorders and malignancy
usual characteristics of PAD
diminished or absent peripheral pulse
pallor, hyperemia, trophic skin changes and ulcerations
sensory disturbances - paresthesia
intermittent claudication - pain
muscle weakness - paresis
