Q

3 Types of Joints

A
  1. synovial: freely moveable

Q

Types of Synovial Joints

A
  1. Pivot: vertebrate spinning on other vertebrate, rotation, ex: C1 and C2
  2. Plane: 2 flat edges, slide and glide, ex: ac joint and infacet joint
  3. Hinge: motion in one direction, ex: elbow
  4. Saddle/sellar: motion in 2 directions, can do circumduction but not rotation, ex: thumb
  5. Condyloid/ ellipsoid: flex/ext abd/add circum, ex: each digit
  6. Ball and Socket/ Spheroidal: most motion, ex: shoulder, femoral head
  7. Bicondylar: ex- tibia and femur

Q

Fibrous Joints

A
  • unite bones via fibrous tissue
  • Slightly Moveable
    - syndesmosis: interosseous membrane between
    radius and ulna
    - gomphoses: teeth in gums
    -Fixed/ Synarthrosis
    - sutures (skul)
    - schindylesis (wedge and groove joint), face bones

Q

Cartilaginous

A
  • Primary Cartilaginous joint/ synchondrosis: bones united by hyaline cartilage, usually temporary, ex: epiphyseal plate
  • Secondary Cartilaginous joint/ symphyses: bones united by fibrocartilage, ex: invertebral discs, pubic symphysis
