articulation Flashcards
(13 cards)
bilabial place of articulation
/b, p, m/
Labiodental place of articulation
/f, v/
Dental place of articulation
/θ (‘th’ing)
ð (‘th’at)/
alveolar place of articulation
/t, d, n, s, z, ɹ, l/
postalveolar place of articulation
/ʃ (‘sh’oe)/
/ʒ (mea’s’ure)/
palatal place of articulation
/j/
velar place of articulation
/k, g, ŋ (si’ng’)/
plosive
- complete block in speech eg. at lips or alveolar ridge
- plosives: /p b t d k g/
nasal
soft palate is lowered so that the breath stream can pass through the nose (no breath through lips)
-nasal: /m n ŋ/
fricative
produced when 2 articulators come together closely enough that the breath stream passing between them is partially obstructed and a noisy turbulent airflow is produced
fricative consonants: /ð θ f v s z ʃ ʒ h/
h sometimes considered a semivowel not consonant
affricative
occurs when a plosive manner is quickly followed by a fricative manner, at the same place of articulation
approximant
occurs when 2 articulators come close to each other, nut not so close to produce friction
approximants: /w ɹ j/
Lateral approximant
this consonant is produced when the breathstream is obstructed in the midline of the mouth, but when the tongue tip/blade touches the alveolar ridge, air is allowed to flow over one or both sides of the tongue
lateral approximant: /l/
