He was a teacher, storyteller, playwright, poet and sign master.

He became editor of the student paper at the California School for the Deaf Berkeley. Over summers, he wrote the sports column for the daily paper. He later wrote for the Buff and Blue paper at Gallaudet.

In college he became manager for the basketball team, and an active member in the Dramatics Club.

Broke away from traditional poetry. He invented a succession of “nonsense” animal signs, involving movement of the whole body, and intense facial expressions.

Once their CIs are off, they are completely deaf. It’s like turning off the radio volume. You won’t hear anything when it’s off.
