ASL-TIMELINE-7 Flashcards
(22 cards)
Time Line:
ASL signs are related to a “virtual” timeline that runs from behind you for the past to in front of you for the future
The general concept here is that you have a timeline that runs from behind you to in front of you. By doing a sign farther back you can indicate the concept occurred further in the past. The farther forward things are signed, the further in the future they are. Doing a sign close to your body can be used to indicate the nearness or recentness of an event. more info click Here
TIME
The sign for “time” in ASL points to the wrist at the location where people used to wear watches, (before cell phones). Just tap your wrist twice. If you want to know “What time is it?” then do this same sign but with furrowed eyebrows.
FINISH
The sign for “finish” is made by placing both of your open hands in front of you. Each hand should face you, with your fingers pointing upward. Twist both hands quickly a couple times ending with the palms pointing (somewhat) forward. You can also do this sign with just a single twist which makes it seem more “final.”
SIGN THE SENTENCE
Have you seen the movie [spell a popular movie]?
[YOU FINISH WATCH MOVIE “__________?”] (https://lifeprint.com/asl101/pages-signs/06/you-finish-watch-titanic.html)
the video spells Titanic- but any movie is good.
FUTURE
The sign for “future” is made by slicing a “flat hand” forward through the air. The farther you move your hand, the further into the the future you are referring. This sign can also mean such things as “WILL” as in, “Will you go to college?” (YOU FUTURE COLLEGE YOU?). You can also use a double arching movement to mean “someday” or “the distant future.” If you do a single large strong movement it can mean “a long time from now.”
LONG
The sign for “long” drags the dominant hand “index finger” up the non-dominant hand’s forearm.
NOW
Move the “Y” hands down a few inches. Your palms should be facing upward.
Note: If you use a double motion on this version of the sign for now, it can be interpreted as TODAY.
TODAY
“TODAY” (version) / “right now” [NOW+NOW]
The meaning of this sign depends on what the other person asked. For example, if the other person asks you what time is the meeting? If you respond “NOW+NOW” it would mean “right now” or currently.
If someone asks you what day the party is, you can respond by signing “NOW + NOW.”
The double “NOW” is interpreted to mean “today.”
OLD
The sign for “old” starts as a “C” hand and turns into an “S” hand as you pull it down from your chin.
“how-OLD” generally uses two quick little movements from the chin.
“very-OLD” uses one long sometimes wavy movement from the chin.
PAST
The sign for “past” is made by moving your dominant hand over your dominant shoulder. Your palm should face your body. The more emphasis you give the motion and/or the larger movement you use indicates further into the past:
PAPER
The sign for “paper” uses a repeated backward movement of the dominant hand. If you are right handed, strike the left palm with the right palm twice. The right hand moves. The left hand doesn’t.
SIGN THE SENTENCE
How many did you get wrong on the previous test for this class?
TOMORROW
Note: If you use a double movement this sign changes to mean: “daily” or “everyday.”
WAIT
The sign for “wait” holds the hands up and off to the side a bit. Wiggle the fingers.
WHEN
The sign for “when” is made by holding your left index finger up (if you are right handed). Your palm should face right. Bring the tip of your right index finger near to the tip of your left index finger. Circle the tip of your right index finger in a clockwise motion around your left index finger and end with the tip of the right index finger touching the tip of the left finger. Your arm doesn’t move much on this sign. The movement is in the wrist. (If you are left handed just do a mirror image of this sign.)
YEAR
The sign for “year” is made by forming both hands into the letter “S.” If you are right handed, rotate your right hand completely around the left. The right hand should come to rest on top of the left.
Memory aid: Think of the earth circling the sun in one year’s time.
