What Happened in the Election of 1844
The Election of 1844 featured Whig Candidate Henry Clay, democratic candidate Martin Van Buren who for the good of the party through his support behind the candidate who pushed for Manifest Destiny, James K Polk.

What was the Willmont Proviso?
In 1846 the Willmont Proviso was an attempt to make the newly acquired land from Texas free of slaves. It passed in the House but the Senate blocked the bill showcasing the only power southern plantation owners was in the senate.
What was the Compromise of 1850?
The Compromise of 1850 was the attempt made by Henry Clay in order to admit California into the Union as a free state but allow all territories to have popular sovereignty. Washington DC would also limit its slave trade.
What was “young america”*
Young America was a branch of the democratic party in 1854 that focused on looking toward acquiring new territory rather than focus on issues of slavery. Ironically attempts to annex Hawaii and Canada were stopped due to issues on slavery.
Kansas-Nebraska Act
The Kansas Nebraska Act in 1854 marked the end of the whigs and paved the way for the new territory of Kansas Nebraska which would be popularly sovereign in direct violation of the Missouri Compromise.
Free Soil Party
This party viewed free soil and free labor threatened by slaves. They said that slaves limited the amount of prosperity america could have. This became the basis of the republican party

This was the theory that many southerners had regarding motives of southern plantation owners
Dred Scott v. Sandford
March 6, 1857 Dred Scott lives in the territories for more than 90 days making him a free man but his dead master’s challenges this law and the supreme court rules that congress has no say over wether a state is free. Territories become slave holding areas.
John Brown
This Crazy guy Caused many of the events of bleeding kansas. Killing many proslavery advocates with his men he believed the only way to get rid of slavery was to take over the south. In 1859 he lead 18 men to take over the armory at Harpers Ferry, Virginia

Abraham Lincoln republican vs J. C. Brekinridge Northern Democrat vs Stephen A. Douglas. Southern Democrat. This was the final straw for South Carolina
The National Bank Acts
In 1863 and 64 Republicans implemented a national bank that any bank with enough capitol could join. This was an attempt to finance the impending Civil War.
Draft Riots
In 1861 a draft was initiated in the north and nearly every man was eligible except if you could pay 300 dollars. In 1863 for 4 days there were riots that killed nearly 100 people. Only troops from the battle of Gettysburg arriving broke up the riots.
Johnsons Impeachment
The tenure of office act in 1867 was violated by Andrew Johnson so the senate and the radical republicans impeached him but he was never found guilty in the house.
Scalawags and Carpetbaggers
Republicans, most commonly whigs that simplified with the blacks of the south were commonly called Scalawags
Carpetbaggers were those who moved to the south that took advantage of the new economic activities.
Era of Good Stealings
Grant was inexperienced as a president and he and his cabinet were involved in a number of scandals
Credit Moblier
This dummy company was set up by big railroad to give kickbacks to congressmen.
Whiskey Scandal
Trusted members of the cabinet were filling false reports on the amount of whiskey they were receiving. With the money they saved off taxes they pocketed
Southern Redemption
By 1877 7 out of 10 states had gotten rid of their black republican governments. Terror groups like the KKK contributed to the fear of black voters.
Enforcement Acts
In 1872 the enforcement acts protected the rights of many black americans by outlawing groups like the KKK and white leagues.
Compromise of 1877
The election of 1876 was one of the most disputed in american history. Samuel J Tilden democrat vs. Rutherford B. Hayes. Tilden had the majority but there were 20 undecided electoral votes that would be given to Hayes if he would end reconstruction
