Equipment: Denture brush or toothbrush, denture cleanser or tablet, labeled denture cup, towels, basin, glass of water and gloves. (16 cards)
Step One
Introduce self, identify resident by name, and explain procedure. Hand hygiene. Gather supplies.
Step Two
Put on gloves. No rips, no tears, no discoloration, fits like a glove.
Step Three
Line the sink or a basin with towels and fill with water. The towel and water will prevent the dentures from breaking if they slip from your hands and fall into the sink.
Step Four
Rinse the dentures in tepid/lukewarm running water before brushing them. Do not use hot water.
Step Five
Apply toothpaste or cleanser to toothbrush.
Step Six
Brush dentures on all surfaces.
Step Seven
Rinse all surfaces of dentures under tepid/lukewarm running water. Do not use hot water.
Step Eight
Rinse denture cup before placing clean dentures in it.
Step Nine
Place denture in clean denture cup with solution or tepid/lukewarm water. Make sure cup is labeled with resident’s name. Put denture cup where it is normally stored.
Step Ten
Clean and return the equipment to proper storage.
Step Eleven
Drain sink. Dispose of towels in proper container.
Step Twelve
Remove and dispose of gloves properly. Hand hygiene.
Step Thirteen
Re-glove and complete oral care for the resident.
Step Fourteen
Remove and dispose of gloves properly. Hand hygiene.
Step Fifteen
Report any changes in appearance of dentures or gums to the nurse.
Step Sixteen
Document procedures using facility guidelines.
