What are possible treatments for middle ear disease in those with cleft palate?

A

Ventilation tubes (best option, often done at first surgery), antibiotics (don’t need if have tubes), amplification, preferential seating in class (if have hearing loss)

Why is the ear so sensitive to pressure changes?

A

That is literally it’s job (detect small pressure changes in the ear to hear sound)

What feeding problems are present in children with cleft lip and palate?

A

Difficulty with lip seal (if cleft lip), difficulty with nipple compression, difficulty developing negative pressure (sucking), nasal regurgitation

A

Usually don’t have significant problems, breast feeding is possible

A

Incomplete clefts usually have no problem, more extensive the cleft=more likely problems will occur

A

Breast feeding pretty much impossible. Difficulty with nipple compression and negative pressure. can use special bottles
