What is the initial treatment for newly diagnosed asthma in this age group?
Twice-daily paediatric low-dose ICS + SABA as needed.
When should paediatric low-dose MART be considered?
If asthma is not controlled on low-dose ICS + SABA and the child can manage MART.
What should be considered if low-dose MART fails?
Increase to paediatric moderate-dose MART.
What should be considered if the child cannot manage MART and has uncontrolled asthma?
Add LTRA to low-dose ICS + SABA for a trial of 8–12 weeks.
What treatment should be offered if LTRA fails and MART is unsuitable?
Twice-daily low-dose ICS/LABA + SABA as needed.
What if asthma remains uncontrolled on low-dose ICS/LABA + SABA?
Escalate to moderate-dose ICS/LABA + SABA.
When should a referral be made in this age group?
If asthma is not controlled on moderate-dose MART or ICS/LABA (with or without LTRA).
