ATM 1 Flashcards
(31 cards)
What are the 4 main purposes of an ATS?
-Preventing collisions between aircraft in the air (between aircraft and obstacles on the manoeuvring area)
-Expediting and maintaining an orderly flow of traffic
-Alerting appropriate organisations in regards of aircraft in need of SAR
-Providing advice and information relevant to the safe and efficient conduct of flights
What services fall under an ANS?
-Surveillance/Comms/Nav
-Met information
-SAR
-ATM
-AIS
What services fall under ATM?
-ASM (Airspace Management)
-ATS
-ATFCM
What services fall under ATS?
-ATC
-Advisory service
-Alerting service
-FIS
What are the methods of providing an ATC service?
-Procedural control
-Surveillance control
-Aerodrome control
What are the methods of transmitting information?
-RTF (requires receipt)
-General call (does not require receipt)
-CPDLC
-Broadcast periodically updated (ATIS & VOLMET)
What is a FIS?
A service provided for the purpose of giving advice and information useful for safe and efficient flight
What is the scope of a FIS?
-SIGMET (warning of significant weather)
-AIRMET(warning of moderate weather)
-Radio nav service availability
-Aerodrome serviceability
-Collision hazards (C-G)
Can a FIS or FISO offer commands?
No
Who provides FIS at a Centre? What can they do? What times?
ATCO or FISO (FISO can only provide FIS and has to be outside CAS)
-Between 0800-2200 (24h at Swanwick)
Who provides FIS at an Aerodrome?
App/AD or AFISO
What is a VOLMET?
VOLMET is a worldwide network of radio stations that broadcast TAF, SIGMET and METAR information using automated voice transmissions
What does a VOLMET broadcast on VHF offer?
They broadcast information on a continuous loop and is updated when needed
What does a VOLMET broadcast on HF offer?
Typically on a schedule, information for an aerodrome/region broadcast in the same 5 mins each hour
What is an ALRS?
Service provided to all aircraft receiving an ATC service, having filed a FPL or known to be under unlawful control
What are squawk codes 7500, 7600 and 7700 used for?
-Unlawful interference
-Broken radio
-Emergency
What should a unit responsible for an ALRS do?
-Notify (other units)
-Request (assistance in search)
-Collect (information to give rescue services
-Announce (termination of state of emergency as required)
What are the 3 phases of an emergency?
-Uncertainty
-Alert
-Distress
What are the criteria for the Uncertainty phase?
(Uncertainty exists to safety of a/c)
-No comms received for 30 minutes
-Aircraft fails to land 30 minutes after ETA
What are the criteria for the Alert phase?
Apprehension exists to safety of a/c)
-Attempts to establish comms with an aircraft fail
-Cleared to land and fails to land after 5 mins
-Info suggest aircraft operating efficiency is impaired
-Aircraft is known/believed to be under unlawful control
What are the criteria for the Distress phase?
(Reasonable certainty of danger to a/c exists)
-Additional attempts to establish comms fail
-Fuel onboard considered exhausted
-Info received suggests forced landing likely
-Info received that aircraft has/will make a forced landing
What is a SSR?
-Search & Rescue Region
-Area associated with a RCC where SAR is provided
What is a RCC?
Rescue Coordination Centre
What is a JRCC
Joint RCC
For aviation and maritime events. Responds to helo requests from police, coastguard, fire etc
