Atmospheric Moisture Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is heat energy is absorbed or released in the phase change known as?
Latent heat
What is sensible heat?
Energy added or removed that results in a temperature rise/decline in the system
What is evaporation? Is latent heat released or absorbed during this process?
- Liquid changing state to a gas
- Latent heat is absorbed, making surrounding atmosphere cooler.
What is condensation ? Is latent heat released or absorbed during this process?
- Water changing state from gas to liquid.
- Latent heat is released, making surroundings warmer
What are sublimation and deposition?
- Sublimation is phase change from solid to gas.
- Deposition is phase change from gas to solid
What are the 6 stages in teh water cycle?
- Evaporation
- Condensation
- Precipitation
- Accumulation
- Surface Runoff
- Infiltration
What is relative humidity?
Expressed as a percentage, the actual water vapor content of a sample of air compared to the maximum it could hold at its temperature.
What is the relative humidity of a parcel of air that is saturated?
100%
What instrument is used to measure relative humidity?
- Psychrometer
- Has a dry bulb and wet bulb thermometer that uses evaporative cooling to determine humidity.
What is the dew point?
Temperature at which the air is saturated with water vapour.
