Q

What is the Plum Pudding Theory? Who created it?

A

The plum pudding theory was created by J.J. Thomson. (great grandfather).

The plum pudding theory stated that an atom was made of one big ball of positive charge with little radon negative charges.

Q

What theory did Ernest Rutherford bring forward? Which scientist supported his theory?

A

Ernest Rutherford suggested that an atom has a tiny nucleus with all positive charges.

James Chadwick supported this theory.

Q

Which scientist discovered that:
1) Electrons move in circular orbits (shells) around the nucleus.

2) When an electron moves from one orbital to another (electromagnetic energy) is either absorbed or released.

A

Neil’s Bohr (Mrs MCM) discovered the circular orbits as well as the energy which is released for absorbed.

Q

What did James Chadwick do?

A

When James Chadwick was conducting an experiment to prove the Ernest Rutherford theory he discovered the “neutron.”

As he realized there was “empty space”

He discovered that the neutron had the mass of a proton but no charge.

Q

Explain the Geiger and Marsden Experiment.

A

The Geiger and Marsden experiment was conducted by students of Rutherford who were studying the passage of alpha particles through thin pieces of gold foil.

They realized that some of the alpha particles were being deflected and some were knocked backwards.

Q

What does the Geiger and Marsden experiment prove?

A

The Geiger and Marsden experiment provides evidence that:

1) The fact that nearly all went through means that majority of an atom is empty space.

2) The deflection and reflection is recognized as a repulsion caused by some other positive charge, which makes the α (alpha particle) positive.
