Atomic Structure Flashcards
(14 cards)
Describe the structure of an atom
(Include charges)
The nucleus has protons and neutrons, the electrons are in the outside shells/energy levels
Proton-mass:1,charge:+1
Electron-mass:1/1837,charge:-1
Neutron-mass:1,charge:0
Explain why atoms have equal numbers of protons and neutrons
Atoms are always neutrally charged which means they always have the same amount of protons as electrons to cancel each other out. Only ions are positively or negatively charged
Why are atomic mass is not always a whole number?
The actual mass of an atom is too small so they compare carbon-12 with the element’s abundance and all it’s isotopes’ masses
What is an element?
A substance made up of only a type of atom
What is a compound?
A substance made up of 2 or more types of atoms chemically joined together
What is a mixture?
A substance made up of w or more types of atoms not chemically joined together
What is the atomic mass?
Protons+nuetrons
What is atomic number?
Just protons
How to work out protons,neutrons and electrons?
P=atomic number
E=atomic number
N=atomic mass-number
What is an isotope?
An atom with the same number of protons but different number of neutrons
What is a radioisotope?
An isotope that has an unstable nucleus
Who loses electrons?
Metals-cations
Who gains elections?
Non metals-anions
How to calculate abundance?
Ar=(massabundance)+(massabundance)/total abundance
