Atoms Flashcards
(19 cards)
What surrounds the Nucleus in rings?
Electrons
What kind of charge does an Electrons carry?
A negative charge( - )
What are two pieces found clumped together in the centre of the nucleus
Protons and Neutrons.
What kind of charge does an Protons carry?
A positive charge( + )
What kind of charge does a Neutron carry?
A neutral charge(hence the name “neu”tron has a charge of zero.
The centre of an Atom is called ____
Nuclues.
Electrons are found in what areas?
Shells. Shells are sometime called Energy Level.
What are Shells?
Shells are areas that surround the Nucleus and hold Electrons
Each of those shells has a name(The names are a single letter starting from K to Q)
The order of the shells from closest to center to furthermost:
K L M N O P Q
How many Electrons can the closest shell hold?
2 Electrons in the closest shell called the K shell
How many Electrons can the rest of the shells hold not including the first shell?
The rest of the shells can hold 8 Electrons.
As you move higher into the Atomic values the shells can hold higher number of Electrons. What is the maximum number one shell can hold?
32 Electrons is the maximum.
What does the number on top of the symbol represent?
Atomic Number
What does the number on the bottom of the symbol represent?
Atomic Mass
How do you find the number of Neutrons in a Element?
AtomicMass - #AtomicNumber = #OfNeutrons
What is a ion?
An Ion is an atom that has either gained or lost an electron.
What happens when Atoms react?
When elements react the different atoms take or give electrons to have a full outer shell and this leaves the clones either negatively or positively charged.
What kind of charge does an Atom have when it loses electrons?
A positive(+) charge.
What kind of charge does an Atom have when it gains electrons?
A negative(-) charge.
