Atoms and Chemical Reactions: Key terms Flashcards
(15 cards)
What is an atom?
A very small particle and the basic unit of an element
What is chemical bonding?
Very strong forces of attraction between atoms that requires a lot of energy to overcome
What is a chemical symbol?
The one or two letter symbol given to an element.
What is a compound?
A substance made of two or more elements chemically bonded together.
What is a mixture?
A substance that contains more than one type of particle that isn’t chemically bonded to one another.
What does ductile mean?
Capable or being stretched out into wires or threads.
What is an element?
A substance made of only one type of atom (pure)
What is a giant substance?
A substance made of billions and billions of atoms chemically bonded together.
What is a group?
A vertical column on the periodic table
What does lustrous mean?
Something shiny because it reflects light.
What does malleable mean?
Able to be hammered or pressed into shape without breaking or cracking
What is a molecule?
A substance made of 2-100 atoms chemically bonded together.
What is the Periodic Table?
A chart that contains all the elements that exist.
What is physical property?
Any characteristic of a substance, such as colour, conductivity, density, melting point or strength.
What is a subatomic particle?
An extremely small piece of matter that is found inside of an atom (e.g. proton, neutron, electron)
