Atoms and Molecules Flashcards
(20 cards)
Molecules
- Two or more atoms joined together in a specific geometrical arrangement
Atoms
- submicroscopic particles that constitutes the fundamental building blocks of ordinary matter
Matter
- Anything that occupies space and has mass.
- classified by its state (physical form) and composition (basic components that make it up)
States of Matter
- Solid
- Liquid
- Gases
Chemistry
The science that seeks to understand the behavior of matter by studying the behavior of atoms and molecules
Law of conservation of mass
- Lavoisier
- “In a chemical reaction, matter is neither created nor destroyed.”
Substance
- A specific instance of matter, such as air, water, or sand
State
- A matter’s physical form
Composition
- A matter’s basic components that make it up
Solid Matter
- Atoms or molecules are packed close to each other in a fixed location
- Atoms and molecules vibrate but do not get passed each other
- May be crystalline or amorphous
Crystalline
- Atoms or molecules are in patterns with long range, repeating order
Amorphous
- Atoms and molecules do not have any long range order
Liquid matter
- Atoms and molecules are packed almost as tight as in solid matter, but are free to move relative to each other, creating a fixed volume, but not shape.
Gaseous Matter
- Atoms and molecules have lots of space
- free to move around
Pure Substance
- made up of only one component
- composition is invariant
Components
Individual atoms or grouped atoms
Invariant
- Composition does not vary from one sample to another
Mixture
- two or more components mixed together in proportions which may vary from one sample to another
Element
- A pure substance which cannot be broken down chemically into simpler substances.
Compound
- composed of two or more elements in fixed, definite proportions
