Scientific Termonology Flashcards
(7 cards)
Empirical
Scientific knowledge is based on observation and experiment
Hypothesis
- formed from observations
- a tentative interpretation or explanation of the observations.
Falsifiable
A prediction which can be confirmed or refuted by further observation
Experiment
Highly controlled procedures designed to generate observations
Scientific law
- A brief statement that summarizes past observations and predict future ones
- Describes how nature behaves by making generalizations about what nature does
- AKA principles
Scientific theory
- A model for the way nature is and tries to explain not only what nature does, but why
- can never be conclusively proved because a future observation can reveal a flaw
Atomic Theory
- John Dalton
- proposes matter is composed of atoms, which cannot be created nor destroyed; only rearranged. Because of this, the total amount of mass remains the same
