Atoms elements and compounds Flashcards
Atoms
All substances are made up of tiny particles called atoms.
Some substances contain only one type of atom. These are called elements
Elements
Elements cannot be broken down into simpler substances.
Every element has its own chemical symbol, which appears in the periodic table of the elements.
Subatomic particles
The three subatomic particles that make up an atom are the proton, neutron and electron.
Proton
Protons are positive and found in the nucleus
Neutron
Neutrons are neutral and found in the nucleus
Electron
Electrons are negative and are found orbiting the nucleus
Atomic number
The atomic number of an element is the number of protons in an atom of that element(smaller)
Mass number
The mass number of an element is the total number of protons plus neutrons in an atom of that element
Metals
Metals are materials that are usually hard, dense, shiny and have high melting points. They are good conductors of heat and electricity.
Metals can be hammered into shape (malleable) and can be stretched into wire (ductile).
