Atoms, elements and the periodic table Flashcards
(7 cards)
Periodic Law
Periodic Law states that when the elements are organized into a table according to atomic number, the chemical and physical properties of the elements repeat in a regular, periodic pattern.
The Period Related Pattern
The period in the periodic table corresponds to the number of electron shells for each of the elements in that row
The Group Related Pattern
A column in the periodic table is called a GROUP
electrons behave in exactly the same manner in terms of gaining or losing the same number of electrons to form an ion
Lewis Structures
Ignoring the transition metals, the Lewis structures of all the elements in the same group always have the same number of dots around their symbols (representing their valence electrons)
The Octet Rule
During a chemical reaction, the main goal for an element is to end up with a full outer energy level
How do elements achieve Octet
Elements can do this by gaining (non-metals), losing (metals), or sharing electrons (non-metals)
when they get it then its stable
Isoelectronic
If any elements or ions have the same number of electrons, they are isoelectronic
