Atoms, Ions, and Compounds + Electrons and Bonding (F6examonly) Flashcards
(8 cards)
What are isotopes?
atoms of the same element with the same number of electrons and protons, but different number of neutrons, resulting in different atomic masses
What is the relative mass of an electron compared to protons and neutrons?
1/1836
What are subshells?
orbitals of the same type grouped together within a shell
What is an atomic orbital?
- a region around the nucleus that can hold up to 2 electrons with opposite spins
- this region is where there is a high probability of an electron being there
What is the shape of an s-orbital?
sphere
What is the shape on an p-orbital?
dumbbell
What is a covalent bond?
the strong electrostatic attraction between a shared pair of electrons and the nuclei of the bonded atoms
What are dative covalent bonds?
a covalent bond where the shared pair of electrons are donated from one of the atoms only - both electrons in the shared pair originate from the same donor atom
