Attachment: Schaffer’s stages of attachment AO3 Flashcards
(6 cards)
Strength of the Schaffer & Emmerson study:
How did it have a good external validity? (What did babies and caregivers do?)
- The parents did normal activities
- The babies and caregivers acted naturally
What does this mean?
One weakness of Schaffer & Emmerson’s study was poor evidence at asocial stage. Why?
- The babies have poor coordination and immobility which mean they did not display the expected behavior.
- Babies were likely to have experienced anxiety
This says that:
It is difficult to assess their behaviour
One strength of the Schaffer & Emmerson’s study was real world application. How?
- What validity can you relate to this?
- The research might be helpful in practical applications, to be specific day care centers.
- It is helpful especially on the day where unfamiliar carers are present because it allows the day care to prepare before the babies’ will start their first day in the center.
- Ecological validity
What did Van IJzendoom do?
Looked at one sample at a cultural + historical context
What did Van IJzendoom say about multiple attachment?
In other cultures, multiple attachments at an early age is normal
What are 2 strengths and 2 limitations of schaffer & emmerson study?
2 strengths:
- Good validity
- Has a real world application
2 limitations
- Poor evidence at asocial stage
- low population validity
