Specific powers
are listed in the Constitution and outline the federal government’s areas of responsibility
residual powers
areas of law- making power not mentioned in Constitution and so states can make their own laws on (e.g. education, public
transport and hospitals)
exclusive powers
areas only the Commonwealth
Parliament can make law (e.g.
defence and currency)
concurrent powers
areas in which both the Commonwealth and state parliaments can make law
(e.g. marriage and taxation)
referendum
the process for changing the wording of the Australian Constitution; this
requires a proposal for change
to be passed by both houses of
Commonwealth Parliament and
a double majority when voted for by the australian public
