autonomic nervous system Flashcards
(51 cards)
what type of activities does the ANS carry out?
involuntary (smooth muscle, cardiac muscle and some glands)
what are the 2 divisions of the ANS?
sympathetic and parasympathetic
where are the cell bodies of pre-ganglionic parasympathetic neurons??
- brainstem (CN 3,7,9,10)
- sacral spinal cord (segments 2,3,4)
where are the cell bodies of pre-ganglionic sympathetic neurons??
- thoracic and lumbar regions of the spinal cord ( T1-L2)
which nervous system is the adrenal medulla part of?
SNS
where is pararsympathetic ganglia?
near/on effector organ
where is sympathetic ganglia?
halway
name the structures affected by th PNS
iris,; ciliary muscle, lacrimal, salivary glands, heart, bronchi, GI tract, bladder, genitalia
which overall effect does the PNS have on energy ?
conservative, storing energy
which overall effect does the SNS have?
fight, flight or fright
which structures are affected by the SNS?
iris, blood vessels, heart, bronchi, GI tract, adrenal medulla, bladder, gentitalia
does the ANS control breathing?
No
what is the tranamitter between the ganglion and effector in the PNS?
acetylcholine for both
what is the tranamitter between the ganglion and effector in the SNS?
acetylcholine (ganglion) and noradrenaline (effector)
what does adrenaline act as in a local anasthetic?
vasoconstrictor
which 1 type of nerves are only recieved by blood vessels and glands in the periphery (skin, muscle)
sympathetic
how is blood vessel diameter controlled?
varying activity of sympathetic nerves
name a modified sympathetic ganglion
adrenal medulla
what effect does the parasympathetic NS have on the heart?
decrease HR
what effect does the parasympathetic NS have on the lungs?
decreased breathing rate
what effect does the parasympathetic NS have on the eyes?
make pupils smaller
what effect does the parasympathetic NS have on the digestive system?
increase blood flow to it
what effect does the parasympathetic NS have on the BVs?
vasodilation
what effect does the parasympathetic NS have on the bladder ?
relax internal sphincter and contact bladder
