Autonomic Nervous System drugs Flashcards
(20 cards)
What is the nervous system?
Is the master controller of most of the body’s activity.
Describe the two functions of the nervous system.
•Monitoring the body internal and external environments
•Process and integrate environmental changes to determine the response.
What is an afferent?
Detect the changes outside or inside of the body.
What is efferent?
The nervous system sends out the response based on the analyzed stimulus.
What is the autonomic and somatic nervous system?
Autonomic Nervous System- The ANS influences all uncontrolled body functions. For example, Digestion.
Somatic Nervous System- Voluntary Control
What are the three major functions of the ANS?
•Regulate heart
•Regulation of secretory glands
•Regulation of smooth muscles
Give the five steps of synaptic transmission.
Steps:
•Synthesis
•Storage
•Release
•Receptor Action
•Termination
Three ways of termination
•Re-uptake
•Enzymatic degradation
•Diffusion away from the gap
What are catecholamines and Non catecholamines?
Catecholamines-It has catechol and amines, and it gives during an emergency.
Non catecholamines- No catechol rings.
Epinephrine is Selective or Non-Selective?
Non-selective
What are the two categories of COPD?
• Emphysema
•Chronic bronchitis
How do you differentiate the cholinergic and myotinic crisis?
Using the Neostigmine (Tensilon) test, it is cholinergic when the patient gets weaker. Myotinic crisis when the patient becomes stronger.
What is Acetylcholinesterase?
It is an enzyme that inactivates or breaks down acetylcholine before reaching organ cells.
What is a Non-Depolarizing Agent?
Medication that has an instant effects
Describe the terms “selective” and “non-selective.”
Selective- It only affects or works on one type of receptor.
Non-selective- It affects all receptors.
Give 3 side effects of adrenergic agonists?
•Tachycardia
•Palpitations
•Increased blood pressure
Pupillary sphincter is for?
For people with glaucoma or eye operation.
What is the terminal neurotransmitter of the sympathetic nervous system and what are the four receptor organs?
Sympa is a norepinephrine and the receptor organ cells are Alpha 1 and 2, Beta 1 and 2.
What is Parasympathetic?
Is an acetylcholine that is activated in non-stressful situations. Receptor organ cells include nicotinic and muscarinic.
Direct, indirect, and mixed acting.
Direct action- Directly affects the receptor organ.
Indirect acting- Increase the production or kill the enzymes that degrade norepinephrine.
-It works in the other parts.
Mixed acting- Both direct and indirect.
