Central Nervous System drugs Flashcards
(20 cards)
What is blood brain barrier?
The blood brain barrier prevents solutes and water from passing through the body fluid. It protects the brain from injury and prevents the sudden changes of concentration between the outside and inside of the brain.
How do we know if a child has ADHD?
Being so hyperactive that he forgets to eat.
What is Tolerance?
When the body of an individual no longer responds to a prescribed medication, it’s not like when he first takes the medicine.
Neuropharmacology is classified in two types.
•Autonomic Nervous System
•Central Nervous System
Where are xanthine and doxapram used?
used to treat respiratory depression.
What is emphysema?
When the alveoli do not expand anymore
What intervention do we do if the patient can’t breathe?
Only3litersofoxygenshouldbegivenbecausemore than thatwillcausethepatienttostopbreathing.
What is Amantadine?
isanantiviraldrugusedtotreatHIV,viruses,andmeasles.
Differentiate between the GABA and ACH
GABA- is an inhibitory neurotransmitter
ACH- is an excitatory neurotransmitter
Entacapone and tolcapone are COMT inhibators.
They enhances the effect of levodopa due to the fact that it prevents the break down.
Define the following:
Seizure, Convulsion and Epilepsy
Seizure- uncontrolled electrical disturbance in the brain
Convulsion- abnormal motor phenomenon
Epilepsy- Repeated seizure are considered as epilepsy.
What do you do if the patient experiences a seizure?
•Removes the things that will harm the patient
•Remove the clip of bra
•Turn the patient to a side lying position
•Never put anything in patient’s mouth
•Time the seizures
Monitor blood levels
10-20mcg/mL
How many weeks before the patient complains that the medicine has no effect?
2-4 weeks
What does methylphenidate do in the body?
It regulates the processess inside the child’s brain, giving them a longer attention span.
What is the effect of morphine when a person overdoses?
The patient can’t breathe anymore.
Two types of seizures:
Partial seizures
Generalized seizures
What are the mechanism of action of anti-epileptic drugs?
•Suppression of sodium
•Suppression of calcium influx
•Antagonism of Glutamate
•Potential of GABA
Dopaminergic Drugs mostly cause?
Orthostatic Hypotension
Non depolarizing agents are used for?
•Ease of passage of an endotracheal tube
•Decrease the amount of anesthetic required during surgery
•Facilitate realigning broken bones and dislocated joints
•Prevent muscle injury during ECT
