  • has your physician referred you to a high risk OB? has the physician informed you of anything to be extra careful about regarding your pregnancy ?

what are RED FLAGS with a pregnant patient - should have a medical consult first?

  • gestational diabetes
  • pre-eclampsia or eclampsia
  • frequent UTIs
  • multiparous (twins etc)
  • on bed rest or disability
  • requires a high risk OB physician
  • no physician; not in prenatal care
  • reminder; these are not necessarily a reason not to treat; just need a consult

what are the “key messages” by healthcare providers to pregnant women/new parents

A
  • start pre natal care EARLY in pregnancy, and include ALL CAREGIVERS like grandparents
  • discuss caries risk factors for toddlers
  • address health literacy level
  • include vertical disease transmission info
  • discuss nutrition (not on test?)
  • use “anticipatory guidance” - at age 7 a child can tie shoe laces and can brush with parent supervision

what is the anticipatory guidance communication principle? resources?

A
  • use BRIGHT FUTURES POCKET GUIDE for a resource (this is for healthcare ppl)
  • give guidance like by age 7, kid can brush teeth/tie shoe laces (supervision tho for brushing)
  • continue to supervise brushing and it should be for 2 minutes 2x a day
