Q
Differences between RJ85 and BAE146
A
- Lycoming ALF 502 engines were upgraded to the more powerful Honeywell LF 507
engines. - Secondly the engine nacelles were redisigned to improve the airflow intake and reduce the noise
output. - And finally the Avionics in the cockpit was upgraded to EFIS (Electronic Flight Instrument System)
- Autothrust.
11
Q
Why does RJ have high wings?
A
- The uninterrupted high wing produced 4% more lift.
- It keeps the engines clear of the ground reducing the chance of the engine ingesting debris or sand
etc. - The high wing allows the flaps the fit snugly with the fuselage so lift efficiency it improved.
- Finally because the engines are suspended from pylons it keeps the engines efflux clear of the flaps.
12
Q
Why does the RJ not have leading edge devices?
A
Leading edge devices are not required due to the large flaps. The are 78% of the wing span and 30% of the wing chord.
13
Q
Which features on Avro allow a steep approach?

- Steep approach monitor system.
- Large flaps
- Air Brakes
