A critical incident is any situation that is either out of the norm or that challenges or would appear to challenge a person’s normal coping mechanisms. Examples include the following situations:

  1. Pediatric injury or death.
  2. Multiple youth fatalities.
  3. Events with severe operational challenges.
  4. Line-of-duty death or line-of-duty injury.
  5. Officer involved in a shooting.
  6. Off-duty death, suicide, homicide or injury.
  7. Events with multiple or mass casualties.
  8. Prolonged events with loss of life.
  9. Events when the victim(s) is (are) known.
  10. Events with excessive media interest.
  11. Any incident that could perceivably cause an emotional impact.
