What is a Balanced Sentence?
A sentence with two or more parts that are grammatically and logically equal in structure.
Example: “She was a great writer, and he was a great reader.”
Define Ballad.
A type of narrative poem, often set to music, that tells a story, typically about love, death, or adventure.
Example: “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” by Samuel Taylor Coleridge.
What is the Bandwagon technique?
A rhetorical or persuasive technique that encourages people to do something because everyone else is doing it.
Example: “Join the millions of customers who have already switched to our service!”
Define Bathos.
A sudden change in tone from the serious or elevated to the trivial or absurd, often causing disappointment.
Example: After a climactic battle scene, a hero might sit down and comment on the weather.
What does Bias mean?
An inclination or prejudice for or against one person or group, often in an unfair manner.
Example: A newspaper showing preferential treatment to one political party while downplaying others.
Define Bildungsroman.
A genre of novel that focuses on the psychological and moral growth of the protagonist from childhood to adulthood.
Example: Great Expectations by Charles Dickens.
What is a Biography?
A written account of someone’s life, usually by another person.
Example: The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank.
Define Black Humor.
A type of humor that makes light of serious, taboo, or distressing subjects.
Example: Dark comedies like Dr. Strangelove or the writing of Kurt Vonnegut.
What is Blank Verse?
Unrhymed iambic pentameter, often used in English dramatic and narrative poetry.
Example: Shakespeare’s Hamlet is written in blank verse.
Define Burlesque.
A form of satire that exaggerates or mocks its subject in a humorous or grotesque way.
Example: The Rape of the Lock by Alexander Pope, which humorously portrays a trivial social incident as if it were an epic.
What is a Buzzword?
A popular word or phrase used to impress others or to sound knowledgeable, often in business, politics, or media.
Example: “Synergy” in corporate communications.
